Kenneth Mitchell, an actor renowned for his diverse roles in “Star Trek: Discovery” and “Captain Marvel,” passed away at the age of 49 due to complications arising from ALS on Saturday.
Mitchell’s official Instagram page shared a poignant statement, reflecting on his courageous battle with ALS over the course of five and a half years. Despite facing formidable challenges, Mitchell exhibited grace and unwavering commitment, embracing each moment with vitality and joy. The statement highlighted Mitchell’s belief in the preciousness of each day and the solidarity found in traversing life’s trials.
In “Star Trek: Discovery,” Mitchell portrayed various Klingon characters including Kol, Kol-Sha, and Tenavik, along with the role of Aurellio. Additionally, he lent his voice to multiple characters in an episode of “Star Trek: Lower Decks.” His versatile talent extended to portraying Carol Danvers’ father in “Captain Marvel” and depicting an Olympic hopeful in “Miracle.” Mitchell’s acting credits also encompassed roles in “Jericho,” “The Astronaut Wives Club,” “Ghost Whisperer,” and “Switched at Birth.”
In 2020, Mitchell disclosed to People magazine his diagnosis of ALS in 2018, a condition that led him to use a wheelchair from 2019 onwards. Reflecting on his journey, Mitchell emphasized the theme of accepting adversity with grace, striving to find beauty amidst hardship. He shared insights from fellow “Star Trek” cast members who had faced similar challenges, advising him to view his experience as an opportunity to perceive life from a unique perspective.
