Disney has announced that Marvel Studios plans to release an untitled film on December 15, 2028. If this date holds, it would mark Marvel’s fourth feature film that year. The studio already has films scheduled for February, May, and November 2028.
However, it remains uncertain whether all four movies will hit theaters as planned. The move is surprising in light of Disney CEO Bob Iger’s recent comments about scaling back. In May, Iger admitted during an investor call that Marvel had overextended itself.
“We all know that in our zeal to flood our streaming platform with more content, we turned to all of our creative engines, including Marvel, and had them produce a lot more,” Iger said. “We’ve also learned that quantity does not necessarily beget quality. And frankly, we’ve all admitted to ourselves that we lost a little focus by making too much. By consolidating a bit and having Marvel focus much more on their films, we believe that will result in better quality.”
Disney often holds onto release dates longer than necessary to keep its options open. For example, Marvel’s Blade only lost its November 2025 slot when Disney was ready to give that date to Predator: Badlands from 20th Century Studios.
Marvel has already trimmed its film lineup for 2026 and 2027. After The Fantastic Four: First Steps opens in July 2026, the studio plans just two films that year: Spider-Man: Brand New Day (a co-production with Sony Pictures) in July, and Avengers: Doomsday in December. For 2027, two more films are planned: an untitled project in July and Avengers: Secret Wars in December.
Secret Wars is set to conclude the Multiverse Saga. After that, Marvel is expected to shift its focus to characters acquired through Disney’s 2019 purchase of 20th Century Fox, including the X-Men. Jake Schreier, director of Thunderbolts, is set to direct the first mutant-focused film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Meanwhile, actors from Fox’s X-Men films, like Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, are expected to appear in Doomsday.
Other projects that could fill the 2028 schedule include Blade, Black Panther 3, and a Fantastic Four sequel.
