Netflix has announced that Kathryn Bigelow’s new film, A House of Dynamite, will debut this fall during the awards season. The thriller will open in select theaters on a date to be announced in October and will stream worldwide on Netflix starting October 24.
The film features a star-studded cast including Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, Gabriel Basso, Jared Harris, Tracy Letts, Anthony Ramos, Moses Ingram, Jonah Hauer-King, Greta Lee, and Jason Clarke. It is seen as one of Netflix’s major releases for the season and is expected to be a strong contender in upcoming awards races.
According to Netflix, the story begins when an unidentified missile is fired at the United States, triggering a tense search for the source and decisions on how to respond.
A House of Dynamite marks Bigelow’s first feature film since 2017’s Detroit. It signals her return to the kind of politically charged and intense storytelling that has defined much of her work. Bigelow made history in 2010 when she became the first woman to win the Academy Award for Best Director for The Hurt Locker, which also won Best Picture and four other Oscars. Her other notable films include Zero Dark Thirty (2012), Point Break (1991), Blue Steel (1990), and Strange Days (1995).
The film reunites Bigelow with familiar collaborators. The screenplay is by Noah Oppenheim (Jackie), who also serves as a producer alongside Bigelow and Greg Shapiro, one of the Oscar-winning producers of The Hurt Locker. Executive producers are Brian Bell and Sarah Bremner.
The creative team includes Oscar-nominated cinematographer Barry Ackroyd, production designer Jeremy Hindle, costume designer Sarah Edwards, and editor Kirk Baxter, a two-time Oscar winner. The music is composed by Volker Bertelmann (All Quiet on the Western Front), with sound design by Paul N.J. Ottosson. Casting is by Susanne Scheel.
A House of Dynamite joins Netflix’s packed fall lineup, which features films like Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, Edward Berger’s Ballad of a Small Player, Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and Richard Linklater’s Nouvelle Vague.
A full trailer and more details about A House of Dynamite are expected in the coming weeks.
