Paramount Pictures has unveiled the full trailer for the reboot of The Naked Gun.
The original The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad! premiered in 1988. It was based on the TV comedy Police Squad!, which humorously parodied police and crime shows. The film was a box office success and led to two sequels: The Naked Gun 2 ½: The Smell of Fear (1991) and Naked Gun 33 ⅓: The Final Insult (1994).
In the new film, Liam Neeson stars as Frank Drebin, the detective originally played by Leslie Nielsen. Paul Walter Hauser plays Captain Ed, a role previously held by Alan North and George Kennedy in the franchise. Pamela Anderson takes on the love interest role, which was played by Priscilla Presley in the original movies. The cast also features Danny Huston, Kevin Durand, and Liza Koshy.
At last October’s Zurich Film Festival, Anderson praised Neeson, saying, “Liam is hysterical in it.”
Neeson returned the compliment in an interview with People, saying, “I’m madly in love with her. She’s terrific to work with—no huge ego, just comes in to do the work. She’s funny and so easy to work with. She’s going to be terrific in the film.”
Despite his praise, Neeson admitted some nervousness about the role. Speaking to Collider, he said, “I’m honored to be offered the part of Frank Drebin, but a little nervous because I’ve only done a couple of short comedic skits before. This will be 95, 100 minutes of comedy.”
The film is directed by Akiva Schaffer, a member of the comedy group Lonely Island. It is produced by Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins. Schaffer co-wrote the script with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand.
The Naked Gun reboot is set to hit theaters on August 1.
