Amanda Seyfried spoke out against Hollywood’s reliance on sequels during a conversation with Superman star Rachel Brosnahan for Interview magazine. Though Seyfried has starred in sequels like Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again and Ted 2, she expressed frustration with the trend. She is also working to revive a Jennifer’s Body sequel alongside original co-star Megan Fox.
Brosnahan plays Lois Lane in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, set to open in July amid a wave of major sequels hitting theaters.
“We have Jurassic World: Rebirth, Superman, and Fantastic Four. What’s our ‘Barbenheimer’ between those?” Brosnahan joked. “The people need you. Supertastic Park?”
Seyfried replied with humor, “It’s Fantastic Super-park. It’s Four Superparks. Four Dinosaurs. Four Super Dinosaurs. I don’t know! But honestly, there’s a bit of fatigue with sequels. I want to see original content. Making something new is really brave and scary. Sequels? Not so much. They’re mostly about money, and that’s frustrating. Still, I’d do Mamma Mia 3 in a heartbeat.”
Brosnahan said she would return for a Superman sequel, adding, “We had a great time. Plus, there are many cast members I didn’t get to work with yet.”
She also addressed actors who join superhero franchises but later complain about them. “I don’t understand why people say yes, then complain after a few sequels,” Brosnahan said. “There was a time when it was trendy to dislike superhero movies. But if you do it, stand by it.”
Seyfried recently told Variety that she is eager to make a Jennifer’s Body sequel but insisted, “I’m not doing it without Megan Fox.” She will also return as the voice of her character in a new animated Ted sequel series currently in development at Peacock.
Superman is scheduled for release on July 11 by Warner Bros.
